Hey there, moms of multiple children!
Let’s talk about birth order. If you’ve got a family with three kids (or more), you probably already know the dynamics of your children and don’t need me to share birth order stereotypes with you. But whether you’re a pro, you’re considering adding more chaos to your household, or just reflecting on your own childhood with your siblings, here’s a breakdown of what you might expect from your little squad due to their position in the family lineup, simply based on some fun things I’ve witnessed from knowing families with multiple children. No science here, just my personal observations.
The Oldest Child: The Responsible Ruler of the Household
- Nickname: The Mini-Me
- Stereotypical Traits:
- Super responsible
- Overachiever
- Perfectionist
- Slightly anxious
- Always reminding everyone of the rules (even you!)
- Why they’re like this:
As the oldest, they’re natural-born leaders and are the pros at managing the chaos of all their younger siblings. With parents figuring out their first round of parenting and still being super fresh, the oldest steps up early, learning how to be organized, reliable, and, let’s be honest, a bit of a perfectionist and anxious to always make mom and dad happy with them. They love to please and are great at helping make your job a little easier just because they love you so much, along with craving the healthy structures and discipline that you’ve set up for them. They’re typically the first to pick up their room without you having to ask 100 times and know the importance of finishing homework and helping their siblings before having screen time. Picture your firstborn, already acting like a mini-adult at age 7 by making sure everyone has their seatbelt on or quietly ensuring you didn’t forget their younger sibling’s jacket as you rush out the door. They’re the ones who might even ask if you remembered snacks before you’ve had your first sip of coffee. This kind of maturity only grows with time and by their teenage years, they’re practically co-parenting with you (just kidding!). All jokes aside, obviously they’re still kids and we would never expect this of them, but these positive traits can be a huge help to you during the busiest of seasons and also often set them up for great things in their future lives. They tend to grow into successful, responsible adults who are often the go-to friend for advice or the coworker who keeps the team on track. You might find your firstborn growing up to be an amazing parent of their own or a hard working manager, teacher, or even the perfect PTA president (the kind who remembers to send out meeting reminders weeks in advance).
The Middle Child: The Sweet, Under-the-Radar Peacekeeper
- Nickname: The Invisible Mediator
- Stereotypical Traits:
- The peacekeeper
- Super affectionate
- Quiet nature (but can be dramatic if overlooked too often)
- Expert negotiator
- A bit of a people-pleaser
- Why they’re like this:
Middle children thrive on connection and balance, and they often become the glue that holds their family together. Having spent years navigating the dynamics between their bossy older sibling and free spirited younger sibling, and sometimes diffusing sticky sibling war situations, they develop incredible empathy and people skills. They’re the ones who know how to see every side of an argument, making them fantastic mediators and able to read the room in many situations. Your middle child might be the one quietly ensuring everyone is happy, handing a snack to their younger sibling when no one’s watching, or quickly offering a solution to keep the peace when a toy battle breaks out. They’ve mastered the art of keeping everyone content and you might even catch them consoling you with a hug when you’ve had a long day. Despite their occasional dramatics (which all kids are apt to experience from time to time anyway), since middle born children love to please and try to be the one who creates the least conflict, their overall quiet nature can make them easy to overlook or accidentally forget at the grocery store (again, kidding!). Their ability to stay calm and bring harmony to the household is actually a superpower! These traits can lead them to excel in careers like counseling, human resources, or even diplomacy – or anywhere else their ability to smooth things over shines like becoming a lawyer. Plus, middle children often become the heart of their own families, raising their own babies who feel deeply loved and understood.
The Youngest Child: The Free-Spirited Chaos Coordinator
- Nickname: The Wild Card
- Stereotypical Traits:
- Rule-breaker
- Attention-seeker
- Spoiled just enough to be charming
- Sweet and sneaky
- The loudest in the room
- Why they’re like this:
By the time the third child arrives, parents are no longer running as tight of a ship. They’re more like captains of a pirate crew. Rules? Wait, what rules? The youngest enjoys the luxury of more laid-back parenting, which means they take full advantage and think the rules don’t apply to them by often getting away with things that would have had the oldest in timeout for a week. The youngest child benefits from this more relaxed parenting, which allows them to grow into confident, free-spirited individuals. They’re used to being surrounded by people, love the attention (and they’re super cute so we love that for them), and often develop into outgoing, creative adults who aren’t afraid to push boundaries. Imagine your youngest breezing into the room, pajamas on inside out, having just painted the dog’s tail. You start to say something, but first they flash that cheeky grin of theirs, grab a cookie, and casually slink away to the next mischief they’re about to create (because they’re stealthy little operators when they want to be!). And you let them, because let’s face it, you’re too tired to deal with it right now and you’ve already learned to pick your battles. These babies of the family are the ones who know how to lighten the mood after a long day with all their playful antics and you just can’t help but laugh at this point. They’ve got an effortless way of keeping things fun and exciting, even if it means bending the rules here and there. That charm and ability to capture attention can translate into careers in entertainment, sales, or entrepreneurship, or anywhere else they can let their big personality shine. And let’s face it, the youngest has learned how to charm their way into hearts, making them the perfect mix of fun, charming, and affectionate.
So, What’s the Takeaway?
At the end of the day, birth order might theoretically influence your kids, but they’re all unique little humans. Sure, you might catch your oldest kid organizing a family meeting, your middle child mediating a “who-ate-the-last-cookie” argument, and your youngest climbing the furniture like a tiny monkey. But no matter what, they’re all full of love, laughter, and maybe just a little mischief, attitude, and drama. And we wouldn’t want it any other way!
Remember: Parenting is a wild ride. Don’t take these funny stereotypes too seriously. After all, whether you’ve got one kid or ten, each child is an adventure of their own and we love them each for their uniqueness no matter what.
Cheers to parenting multiple children and as always, lots of love from one mom to another!

On the journey toward achieving a perfect smile for ourselves or our children, many of us have the option of choosing between traditional metal braces and the more discreet Invisalign treatment. When I was a teenager and needed braces to straighten my crowded teeth and overbite from sucking my thumb until I was practically 10, Invisalign wasn’t yet available. However, now that my teeth are once again overcrowded due to not wearing my retainers as prescribed (PS – don’t do that!) and because of an uneven bite causing some immense jaw pain I’ve been dealing with for years, my orthodontist actually recommended Invisalign over standard braces. Based on his evaluation of my teeth, gums, and jaw, along with the movement needed to help ease my jaw pain, that’s what he felt best for me at this time.
So as a woman who’s had the fortunate privilege (which I mean both sarcastically and gratefully) of experiencing both metal braces and Invisalign, I thought it would be fun and helpful to discuss the differences and similarities of both. I understand the importance of considering all the various factors when making this choice and it’s always best to go with the recommendations of your dental providers based on your specific needs or budget. But I’m here to simply share the aesthetic, functionality, and overall experiences from my own unique perspective as having personally experienced both of these orthodontic options.
Traditional Metal Braces: A Blast from the Past
Remember the days of adolescent angst coupled with a mouth full of metal? Were you dreading picture day or your first kiss, wondering if you’d get stuck together if you kissed a boy who also had braces? For many of us, in addition to frizzy hair and dorky outfits, traditional braces were a rite of passage during our teenage years, both myself and my daughter included. While they may have felt cumbersome, visually prominent, and downright embarrassing at times, they were the go-to solution for correcting dental misalignments, especially for us millennials in the 90s and early 2000s.
Metal braces, also known as conventional or traditional braces, are orthodontic appliances consisting of metal brackets bonded to each tooth and connected by a string of heavy duty gauge metal wires. These braces exert pressure on the teeth, gradually shifting them into the desired positions over time. While traditional metal braces have been a tried and true staple in orthodontic treatment for decades, their conspicuous appearance and fixed nature have prompted the development of more discreet and removable alternatives such as Invisalign. We’ll talk about that more in a moment, but first, here are the key aspects of metal braces.
1. Visibility:
One of the primary concerns with metal braces is their visibility. As a teenager, the thought of sporting a mouthful of metal wires and brackets, along with the good old rubber bands from top to bottom and headgear (IYKYK), might have been a source of self-consciousness. Honestly, it still feels like it’d be that way now as an adult. The conspicuous nature of metal braces often made individuals hesitant to smile openly or feel confident in social settings with so many appliances strapped in and on their face.
On the flip side, where the wires fit over the brackets on each tooth, there’s a small rubber band placed to hold the wire in place on the bracket. These bands come in many different colors and most orthodontists allow you to choose up to a few colors each month after adjustments. While adults may want to choose more nude or tooth colored bands, a lot of kids love getting colored bands. I remember that I’d try to match the bands to whatever holiday or special event was coming up. For example, near Valentine’s Day I’d have pink and red bands or green for St. Patrick’s Day. While adults may not care about having a mouth full of vibrant colors, this might be a fun way to get the kiddos excited about their braces and engaged in the process.
2. Oral Hygiene and Maintenance:
Maintaining good oral hygiene with braces did require a little extra effort. Since you have wires in the way, floss has to be threaded underneath those wires and in between each bracket before being able to floss in between each tooth as usual. This definitely took more time than just your normal flossing routine. Although I’ve always liked to have clean teeth and a nice smile, as a teenager, brushing and flossing just weren’t on my list of most exciting things to do each day. So the thought of taking even more time to do so just wasn’t a motivator. Nowadays I have a water flosser which I use religiously, but back in the day when everything was a manual process, I will admit that flossing may or may not have been completed each day. I’m sure this is the case with a lot of children and teens, so a little monitoring and encouragement from parents is helpful. Additionally, regular dental cleanings are essential, along with the periodic adjustments made by the orthodontist. Unfortunately if you’ve ever had braces, you know that typically the wire gets tightened and sometimes changed to a stronger wire, so those appointments often left you with lingering pain or pressure for a few days. Luckily those appointments were typically only every month or so, at least in my case.
3. Dietary Restrictions:
Ah, the infamous list of foods to avoid with metal braces – sticky candies, anything super hard, popcorn and corn on the cob, gum, apples, etc. These dietary restrictions are imposed to prevent damage to the braces and ensure effective and timely treatment progress. Orthodontists will only reattach brackets so many times before they start charging extra. However, what kid or teenager doesn’t want to eat candy or chew gum? And who cares about popping off a bracket or two (besides the parent who has to pay for it)? Now it’s more of the apples and corn on the cob that would be a bummer for me, but I have to admit the lack of gum and candy are sad and an inconvenience even as an adult.
Invisalign: Modern Orthodontics
Fast forward to the present, where advancements in orthodontic technology have introduced a more discreet alternative to traditional braces – Invisalign. Invisalign is a modern orthodontic treatment that utilizes clear, custom-made aligners to gradually straighten teeth. These aligners are made from a smooth, BPA-free plastic material, making them less visible when worn. Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign aligners are removable, allowing for greater flexibility in eating, oral hygiene, and overall lifestyle. The treatment involves a series of customized aligners, each designed to progressively move the teeth into their desired positions, offering a discreet alternative to traditional braces. This innovative approach to teeth straightening offers several advantages over its metal counterpart, but there are definitely also some things I wasn’t expecting. Let me elaborate…
1. Aesthetic Appeal:
One of the most significant benefits of Invisalign is its more invisible nature (hence its name). The clear aligners are far less noticeable compared to metal braces. For women in their 30s juggling professional, social, and parental commitments, the more discreet appearance of Invisalign aligners can be a game-changer in maintaining confidence and comfort throughout the treatment process.
Having said that, I’m now a couple months into Invisalign and I’m still talking with a slight lisp. It certainly has gotten better over the last several weeks since day one, but I feel like my speech might continue to be slightly altered for the duration of my treatment. I guess we’ll see. However, I also noticed that I’m a little more lispy again right after switching to a new aligner tray (which I personally have to do weekly). So if slightly impaired speech is a concern to you, perhaps if you work primarily on the phone or giving presentations, I’d definitely say give that a consideration before choosing Invisalign.
Additionally, I didn’t realize that I’d still have brackets on some of my teeth. In fact, when the orthodontist was initially placing them on, I thought “hold on, they do know I’m getting Invisalign, right?!”. Turns out that even though the trays are removable, you do still need an anchor point on some of the teeth in order to help aid movement and the aligners staying in place. I don’t know the criteria for choosing which teeth will have the brackets, but I do know from talking with others who have Invisalign that bracket placement is different for everyone. On the plus side though, the brackets are closely matched to your natural tooth color, so whether you have the aligners in or out, the brackets are still drastically less noticeable than the traditional metal brackets.
2. Removability:
Unlike metal braces, which are affixed to the teeth throughout the treatment duration, Invisalign aligners are removable. This feature allows for greater flexibility for eating and oral hygiene. Whether enjoying a meal or brushing and flossing, simply remove the aligners, perform the necessary tasks, and reinsert them.
On the flip side, because these braces are removable, it does leave the door open for having them out too long. In my case, I need to wear them for 22 hours each day (and I do believe that’s standard for all Invisalign wearers). It’s up to me to make sure I’m following that or it will lead to a delay in my treatment. So if you’re not very disciplined, especially when they’re uncomfortable or if you take long periods of time to eat every meal, Invisalign might not be the best solution for you. And I can see this being most problematic for children who might be inclined to take them out and not be diligent about getting them back in right away.
One more thing to note is that although I’m extra conscientious of not throwing my aligners away after I’m done eating, since that’s exactly what happened to one of my retainers when I was younger, it has already happened. I personally didn’t throw them away, but left them on the table wrapped in a napkin and they got picked up with other trash on the table. Totally my fault and I shouldn’t have been so careless, especially since I was provided with a case to store the aligners in during meal time, specifically for this purpose. However, now I will be even more diligent about not throwing them away or just leaving them lying around. But this is just one more thing to keep in mind since they are removable and very easy to miss.
3. Comfort:
Metal braces are notorious for causing discomfort and irritation due to the presence of wires and brackets. I remember having sores on the sides of my cheeks from sleeping on one side too long and from when I played the flute in my high school band. My daughter who played the trumpet had a permanent sore spot inside her mouth for the entirety of her metal braces stint. So on a day-to-day overall basis, I’d say Invisalign is more comfortable because each aligner is custom-made to fit snugly over the teeth, minimizing discomfort and irritation. I will say that for about 2-4 days each week after changing the aligners though, my mouth hurts like a mother. My orthodontist said the “mild pressure” shouldn’t hurt and typically only lasts 2 days for most people. However, the few people I’ve talked to with aligners agree with me that it’s generally more than a couple days and definitely more than “mild” discomfort.
So in weighing out which are more comfortable, it really depends on which day you ask me. Overall the aligners are more comfortable and have less consistent opportunity for irritation, but the pain or “pressure” is more frequent than with metal braces.
4. Not Great for Snackers
If you like to snack, Invisalign might also not be for you. Every time you eat, you need to brush your teeth. That’s a huge commitment to snack foods! And keep in mind you only have a total of 2 hours every day without the aligners for eating and cleaning. Alternately, if you ever wanted to cut back on snacking and don’t feel like brushing your teeth 7 times per day, maybe this is for you! If you’re a drinker of anything other than water, whether juice, coffee, tea, or wine, this might be inconvenient for you as well since you also have to brush after each drink that isn’t water. The main objective is to not have anything sitting in the aligners and against your teeth for any period of time as to not cause cavities.
Similarities: The Common Ground
While metal braces and Invisalign differ in their appearance and mechanics, they share some commonalities in their approach to orthodontic treatment:
1. Treatment Duration:
Both metal braces and Invisalign aim to gradually shift the teeth into their desired positions over time. The duration of treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case and the adherence to treatment guidelines. While some may opt for shorter treatment times with accelerated orthodontic techniques, the average treatment duration typically spans several months to a few years with both options. Again, it really just depends on your situation.
2. Orthodontic Expertise:
Regardless of the treatment option you select, the expertise of the orthodontist plays a crucial role in achieving optimal results. From the initial assessment and treatment planning to the periodic adjustments and monitoring progress, the orthodontist guides patients through every step of the journey toward a beautiful smile.
3. Commitment to Compliance:
Successful orthodontic treatment requires a commitment to compliance from the patient. Whether diligently wearing Invisalign aligners for the prescribed duration each day or adhering to dietary restrictions with metal braces, following the orthodontist’s instructions is essential for achieving desired outcomes.
Conclusion: Choosing the Right Path to a Radiant Smile
As a woman who has traversed both traditional metal braces and now Invisalign, I understand the significance of choosing the right orthodontic treatment. While metal braces served their purpose during my teenage years, the discretness and convenience of Invisalign aligners have made my adult orthodontic journey infinitely more manageable (minus the lisp and pressure when changing to new aligners weekly).
Whether you’re a career-driven woman in her 20s, 30s, or 40s, or a teenager navigating the complexities of adolescence, the decision between metal braces and Invisalign is a personal one. Consider factors such as aesthetics, comfort, and lifestyle preferences when embarking on your orthodontic journey, and remember, the path to a radiant smile begins with a choice that aligns with your individual needs and aspirations, along with the recommendations of the dental professionals.
From one crooked-toothed, imperfectly smiled person to another, lots of love and discipline,

Howdy fellow working women!
Let’s discuss a topic that resonates deeply with many of us: navigating career transitions. This is something that has been hitting so close to home with me lately, especially since it seems like literally everything else in my life changed and was turned upside down from what I was used to during my recent divorce. As I’ve realized now more than ever, it’s challenging to be at this crossroad in so many areas of my life, but especially professionally and especially all at once. The pull I’m experiencing for career change might have been propelled by all the other major life changes, facing pivotal moments and milestones whether I wanted to or not, that demanded me to take careful consideration in all areas of my life.
If you’re in a similar situation, whether it’s contemplating a switch in industries, re-entering the workforce after a break to raise your family or be a SAHM, or leaving your 9-5 to begin on an entrepreneurial journey, these transitions can be both daunting and exhilarating. I’m right there with you, so let’s chat about some practical insights, personal reflections, and valuable resources to help us all navigate these shifts with grace and purpose at this stage in our lives.
Embrace the Journey
First and foremost, let’s acknowledge that career transitions are a natural part of life’s journey. We don’t all keep the nannying position we had after school or the part time weekend bartending job we had in college. If you ended up growing to the bar manager position or started your own daycare center, awesome! But for those of you that outgrew the part time or temporary positions you were in at earlier stages in your life or needed more financial security than part time jobs could offer, remember that’s perfectly normal as well. Sometimes different jobs serve us better as different points in our life and aren’t meant to be our lifelong career path. Sometimes they’re just temporary to bridge us in the in between time or get us through school while working toward our ultimate career goals. During these huge transitions in our lives from one chapter and one workplace to another, it’s absolutely okay to feel uncertain or anxious about the unknown. Embrace this period of transition as an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. Remember, you’ve already accumulated a wealth of skills and experiences, both from out in the workforce and at home managing your household and family, that will serve as your compass in navigating this new terrain.
Define Your Why
Before leaping into a new career path, take the time to reflect on your motivations and values. What drives you? What brings you joy and fulfillment? What are your goals? Think about the goals you have for both yourself individually and for your family if you have one, along with your short term and longer term goals. Understanding your “why” will not only guide your decision-making process, but also fuel your motivation and determination during challenging times. Whether you’re seeking a greater work-life balance, better professional fulfillment, or the pursuit of a passion project (three of my personal “whys”), clarity on your priorities will set the foundation for success during this period.
Do It Scared
One crucial piece of advice for anyone considering a career transition is to embrace the fear and “do it scared.” It’s natural to feel anxious or uncertain about stepping into the unknown, but those feelings shouldn’t hold you back. In fact, some of the most rewarding experiences come from taking risks and pushing past our comfort zones. Courage isn’t the absence of fear, but the determination to forge ahead despite it. Every successful person you admire has faced their own fears and doubts. By acknowledging your fears and still choosing to move forward, you’re not only building resilience but also opening the door to growth and new opportunities. So, take a deep breath, trust in your abilities, and make that leap of faith. Your future self will thank you for it.
Leverage Your Transferable Skills
Transitioning to a new industry or role may seem scary, but don’t underestimate the power of your transferable skills. As women in our 30s and beyond, we’ve honed a diverse set of abilities, from multitasking and problem-solving to communication and leadership, that are invaluable across various domains. Identify and showcase these transferable skills as you begin on your career transition, highlighting how they align with the requirements of your desired role or venture. Think about which of your skills fulfills you, which you’re best at, and which make the most sense with the new path you’re looking to go down. Really focus on these skills, practice and master them, and own them! Having confidence in yourself when interviewing with new employers or prospective clients is crucial.
Continue to Learn
In today’s rapidly evolving job market, the willingness to learn and adapt is paramount. Whether you’re transitioning to a new field or launching your own venture, commit to ongoing education and skill development. There are a plethora of resources available today, so in order to stay on the top of your market and be competitive in your new venture, being an open book and willing to expand your knowledge base is so important. Explore online courses, workshops, or certifications relevant to your desired career path. Practice a growth mindset, viewing challenges as opportunities for learning and development. It’s not about having all the answers, but about being resourceful, having the resources available to you when needed, and being willing to grow into your new career so you can be the best you can be.
Network, Network, Network
They say your network is your net worth and this rings especially true during career transitions. Leverage your professional and personal connections to explore new opportunities, gain insights into different industries, and seek mentorship from those who have walked a similar path. Attend networking events, join industry-specific social media groups or online communities, and don’t hesitate to reach out to individuals whose careers inspire you. Networking isn’t just about securing job leads, but is also about building meaningful relationships that can support you throughout your career journey. LinkedIn is a great platform for making professional contacts, as well as for seeking job opportunities.
Seek Support
Navigating career transitions can feel isolating at times, but remember that you’re not alone. Utilize your support systems that can provide encouragement, guidance, and a listening ear during this journey. This might include friends, family members, mentors, or professional coaches who can offer valuable insights and perspective. Surround yourself with individuals who believe in your potential and are invested in your success. And don’t hesitate to lean on them for support when needed.
Be Resilient
Career transitions are rarely linear and setbacks or roadblocks are inevitable along the way. Embrace resilience as your greatest ally in navigating the ups and downs of your professional journey. Howdy y’all!
If you’d have told my almost 18-year-old New Yorker self that I’d be living in Texas for the next 21 years, I probably would’ve laughed and asked if you meant New Jersey. But here I am, exactly 21 years to the day later from when I moved to Texas and I’d like to share the things I’ve learned since living in the Lone Star State.
Cowboys Are Real, But Not Ubiquitous
First things first, not everyone in Texas is a cowboy. I mean, sure, you’ll see a fair share of hats and boots, but the entire state isn’t a scene out of an old Western movie. However, you will need a pair of broken-in boots. Trust me, they are essential for fitting in and surprisingly comfortable once you get used to them. I’ve also recently purchased my first straw hat that matches my boots. So although I don’t live in Fort Worth or attend the rodeo regularly, I think I might be an officially Texas cowgirl now.
Tumbleweeds and Roadrunners: Myths Debunked
Tumbleweeds do exist. They are not, however, constantly rolling down Main Street. You’ll spot them occasionally, especially when the wind kicks up in West Texas, but it’s not the wild, wild West all day, every day. And roadrunners? They’re real too, but they are not big, purple, or perpetually chased by coyotes. They’re small, quick little birds that you might miss if you’re not paying attention. In fact, I’d been seeing them for years running across the road and never even knew that’s what they were until I asked someone what they looked like.
The Truck, The Boots, and The Gun
Yes, you must own a truck. It’s like an unwritten rule. Whether you need to haul hay or just navigate the sometimes rough terrain, a truck is your best friend. Plus there are many places in Texas that a small little Honday like mine just can’t get to. Potholes in Texas are the size of, well, Texas. Along with the aforementioned requirement to own a good pair of broken in boots, you’ll also need a gun. And no, this doesn’t mean Texas is a dangerous place. It’s more about the culture of hunting, self-reliance, and being prepared.
(Disclaimer: This is meant to be taken in a humorous manner and I’m by no means suggesting for anyone to purchase or possess a firearm, especially if that’s not something you’re comfortable with or not legally able to obtain. I’m merely saying that it’s not uncommon in the culture of Texas to see them openly and frequently, which is much different than the culture in New York. Here, guns are more commonly acceptable to have by even the small town’s little grandma. As they said in the movie Miss Congeniality, “this is Texas; even my florist has a gun!”.)
The Language of Texas
“Y’all” and “reckon” are proper English here and I’ve even heard them in professional settings. It’s amazing how these words can make conversations more inclusive and friendly. I reckon I’ve picked up quite a bit of this charming Southern dialect over the years. And let’s not forget Spanglish. Yes, that’s a real language here. You’ll find yourself mixing English and Spanish in the same sentence without even realizing it. Phrases like “Estoy so tired” and “Vamos a la store” start to become second nature. It’s a beautiful blend that reflects the rich cultural tapestry of Texas and allows people of different dialects to more easily communicate and come together as one unified state.
Italian Food and Pizza
As a New Yorker, I hold a special place in my heart for Italian food and pizza. I hate to break it to you, but good Italian restaurants are few and far between in Texas. And pizza? Let’s just say, don’t set your expectations too high. I’ve had to become quite the home cook to satisfy my cravings or at least be willing to take a decent drive to a larger city to find a good “pie”. Oh and true story…the first time I asked a girl at a pizza joint here for a large “pie”, she was confused and replied “um, ma’am, we don’t serve pies here”. (SMH!)
Seasons: All or Nothing!
Typical seasons don’t exist in Texas. One day it’s summer, the next it’s winter. And sometimes, we get all four seasons in a single day. Dressing accordingly is an art form I’ve yet to master. Layering is your best friend and always have a pair of sunglasses, an umbrella, shorts, and a jacket in your bag or vehicle.
Check Your Boots
Always, and I mean always, check your boots before putting them on. You never know what could have crawled in there overnight, especially if you live in the country like I do. This is one piece of advice that I thank God I’ve never had to learn the hard way, but for others it only takes one surprise to make you a believer.
Texas is Huge
You can drive for 8 hours in almost any direction and STILL be in Texas. The sheer size of this state is mind-boggling. Weekend road trips can take you through deserts, forests, cities, and beaches, all without crossing the state line. In fact, you can fit New York states in the state of Texas.
Miscellaneous (and Humorous) Observations
Here are a few more quirky observations:
- Tex-Mex is its own food group. If you haven’t had enchiladas, birria, or breakfast tacos, you haven’t lived.
- Texans take college football very seriously. VERY SERIOUSLY. Choose your allegiance wisely.
- The phrase “bless your heart” can be both a compliment and a subtle insult. Context is key.
- Fire ants are tiny, but they are fierce. Respect them and always watch where you step.
- Barbecue is a sacred tradition. Each region in Texas has its own style and all are delicious. Try the brisket, ribs, and pulled pork in every city you visit. You can thank me later.
Living in Texas has been a wild ride full of laughs, lessons, and love. And hey, even some of my exes live in Texas! (haha) But in all seriousness, I’ve come to appreciate and adore the unique culture, the friendly people (generally speaking, of course), and the vast landscapes. While I’ll always be a New York in my core and you’ll still hear the accent come out every now and then, Texas has found a permanent place in my heart.
So, to my fellow ladies, whether you’re a Texan born and raised or a transplant like me, I hope you find joy in the quirks and charms of this incredible state. And remember, when in doubt, just smile, nod, and say “y’all”, and everything will be alright.
Bless your heart, get out and enjoy our great state!

As I may have mentioned before, at least a time or two (haha) last year was the most difficult year of my life thus far. During some of my darkest times, someone close to me told me the best thing I could do is take care of myself. If I couldn’t do anything else but get out of bed that day, then just focus on taking care of my mental, spiritual, and physical health as best as I could that day. In that regard, I spent a lot of time trying to make improvements in my life and heal myself in all areas. I had neglected myself and been unhappy for so long, that last year I finally decided it was time to make myself and my well-being a priority.
Having said all of that, I made a lot of purchases (inexpensive ones) that helped me on my journey to better all areas of my life. Although self care looks different for everyone, I thought I’d share with you some of my favorite products that I purchased last year. Some of these items were actually gifted to me by close friends or family, but most are things that I purchased after some research and/or recommendations from others.. Nonetheless, these are the things that helped me get through the last year and things that I would recommend to anyone to make improvements, not just someone going through a hard time.
1. Bidet
This might sound crazy, but hear me out! Investing in a bidet was a game-changer for my personal hygiene and comfort. This simple addition to my bathroom routine made a world of difference. Not only does it leave you feeling incredibly fresh and clean, but it’s also more eco-friendly than traditional toilet paper. It’s a small luxury that has brought a bit of spa-like indulgence into my everyday life. Super inexpensive and very easy to install. I did it all by myself without any tools!
2. Toilet Stool
This might seem like a strange purchase, but a toilet stool has surprisingly improved my digestive health. By elevating my feet, it has helped with a more natural position for easier “movements”. Recommended by my pelvic floor therapist, it’s a small change that has made a significant difference in my overall comfort and well-being.
3. Water Flosser
Flossing has never been the favorite part of my day, but the water flosser made it so much easier and even enjoyable. It’s more effective than traditional floss, reaching places that are hard to get to. My gums have never felt healthier and it’s now a non-negotiable part of my daily routine, especially now that I have Invisalign and am flossing and brushing like 5 times a day!
4. Cat Litter Box Cabinet
As a cat momma to THREE feline friends, keeping the litter box situation under control is crucial which helps me to reducce stress and improve my overall well-being and mood. Plus, I have large dogs that like to find the little “treats” my cats leave behind for them in the “sandbox”. Try convincing my dogs those aren’t for them! This litter box cabinet not only conceals the unsightly box, but also helps contain the mess and odor, as well as keeps it hidden from my nosy canine investigators. It blends seamlessly with my home decor and my feline furballs love their private commode too!
5. Astronaut Galaxy Projector
This lamp was actually a gift, but quickly became one of my favorite items and is a very affordable Amazon find. This little gadget transforms any room into a starry haven with its mesmerizing galaxy and star projections. Not only does it create a serene and magical atmosphere, but it also doubles as an adorable decor piece with its cute astronaut design. It’s perfect for setting a calming mood before bed and I seriously use it every single night now. The soft, colorful lights help me unwind and add a touch of wonder to my evenings, making it a delightful and soothing escape from the stresses of the day.
6. UV Gel Polish Kit
One of my self-care rituals is doing my nails which makes me feel put together and pampered. The UV gel polish kit has been a fantastic addition and allows me to achieve salon-quality nails at home, saving time and money. The gel polish lasts longer than regular nail polish and I love experimenting with different colors and designs. The kit I found on Amazon came with 30 different polish colors, the UV light to cure the polish, and a bunch of accessories like nail files, toe separators, and cuticle oil.
7. Charcuterie Board
Entertaining at home became a joy with the beautiful wooden charcuterie board I found stumbled across. Although it’s not technically for self car, it’s perfect for hosting friends or just treating myself to a fancy snack, both of which help my overall well-being. The board has sections for different cheeses, meats, fruits, and nuts, making it easy to create an Instagram- or Pinterest-worthy spread. It also came with little matching spoons, forks, knives, and dipping bowls to complete the presentation. Plus, it’s a lovely centerpiece for any gathering.
8. Cloud Sandal Slides
Comfort is key to feeling good and the cloud sandal slides I found have been my go-to footwear at home. They’re incredibly soft, easy to slip on and off, easy to clean when my dogs step on me with muddy paws, can be worn outside, and provide excellent support, making them perfect for lounging around the house or running quick errands. They’ve been a small, but significant addition to my comfort routine.
These are just a few of the items that made a big impact on my self-care journey last year. Each of these products brought a little bit of joy, comfort, and convenience into my life, helping me focus on healing and improving myself. If you’re looking for ways to enhance your well-being, I highly recommend giving these a try. Remember, taking care of yourself is the first step to overcoming any challenge.
With love, support, and happy shopping vibes,
